Augustinian Institute Course 2008 / 2009

This academic year’s (2008-2009) edition of the Augustine For All series of lectures at the Augustinian Institute Pieta', will discuss the theme of Christian Citizenship in Saint Paul and Saint Augustine. The lectures are held every Friday, between 19th September and 12th December 2008, from 6pm to 7.15pm. After a few minutes for question time and discussion, refreshments will be served. The majority of the lectures will be delivered in Maltese.

The series of lectures will commence with a Eucharistic Celebration on Friday 19th September at 6.15pm. The Director, the Revd Dr Salvino Caruana OSA STHD will introduce the overarching theme of the course. After the introductory speeches, refreshments will be served.

The opening lecture will be delivered by the Director, the Revd Dr Salvino Caruana OSA STHD, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Malta, on Friday 26th September at 6.00pm discussing the theme concerning some Converging Aspects in the Conversions of Saint Paul of Tarsus & Saint Augustine of Hippo. Augustinian speakers in this year’s series of lectures will be the Revd Raymond Francalanza OSA STHL, Revd Pierre Desira OSA BA STHL, Revd Emmanuel Borg Bonello OSA BA STHB STHL and Very Reverend Dr Lucien Borg OSA PhD (Louv.) Prior Provincial of the Augustinian Maltese Province. Another guest speaker will be Magistrate Dr Silvio Meli LLD who will be delivering a lecture on Augustine of Hippo as Arbiter Episcopalis. The Friday 7th November lecture at the Augustinian Institute will be the 12th Annual Saint Augustine Lecture 2008, and will be delivered by main speaker for this year’s edition, the Revd Professor Robert Dodaro OSA PhD (Oxon.) STHD (Aug.) President of the Augustinian University in Rome. The Revd Professor Dr Emanuel Agius STHD (Louv.), Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta, will also be delivering a lecture in the Augustine For All series 2008-2009. Mr Jean-Paul DeLucca BA MA MA, who teaches at St Aloysius College, will be delivering a lecture on Augustine of Hippo in the Renaissance: from utopia to reality. Mr DeLucca is reading for his PhD with a thesis on the Italian Dominican priest and philosopher Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639). Another lecture will be delivered by Revd Dr René Camilleri STHD (Greg.), Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta. The closing lecture in the series, on Friday 12th December 2008, will be delivered by another member of staff of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta. Full titles and details of the lectures in the entire series will be given later on.

On Friday 12th December 2008 at 6.00pm His Excellency Mgr Professor Tommaso Caputo, Apostolic Nuncio of Malta, will preside and celebrate mass at the Augustinian Church of St Nicholas of Tolentino, Tarxien. Certificates of Attendance will be awarded by the Rector Profs. Juanito Camilleri PhD, together with the Apostolic Nuncio, to the participants at the end of the celebration. Refreshments will be served in the Augustinian Oratory Hall in Lampuka Street.

Those interested in participating in this year’s series of lectures are kindly requested to enrol by not later than Thursday 18th September 2008 sending their participation form enclosing a cheque for €15 drawn on Fr Salvino Caruana.
