Nomination as Cardinal of Fr. Prospero Grech OSA

The Maltese Augustinian Province congratulates one of its members, Fr. Prospero Grech OSA, for his nomination as Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Fr. Prospero (Stanley) Grech OSA hails from Birgu and was born on the 24th December 1925. He joined the Augustinian Order in 1943 and was sent to Rome to further his theological studies at the International College of St. Monica in 1946. Fr. Prospero was ordained priest on the 25th March 1950.

Fr. Prospero continued his academic carreer at the Pontifical Gregorian University specialising in theology with the doctoral theses The Atonement of God in Modern English Theology (1953). He later continued his studies in Sacred Scripture in the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome) where he gradutated summa cum laude.

Amongst other responsibilities held in the Augustinian Order, he was nominated as the first President of the Patristic Institute Augustinianum (Rome) in 1971. He lectured in different universities and served the Catholic Church in a number of Pontifical Commissions and as a Consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.

The Maltese Augustinian Province congratulates Fr. Prospero Grech for this nomination, sign of the great respect he enjoys form His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Apart from being an honor on a personal level, it is also a priviledge for the Order of Saint Augustine. Together with the Church in Malta, the Augustinan Province thanks God and accompanies Fr. Prospero with fervent prayers.
