Augustinian Institute

The Augustinian Institute was erected by a decree of the Augustinian Provincial Council, dating 20th March 1983. The Institute was founded in order to keep the figure and the teaching of St. Augustine alive in the province with the help of research and of courses about the life, writings and heritage of St. Augustine, bishop of Hippo (Annaba) in Algeria and Doctor of the Church. Another purpose was the spreading of the knowledge and teaching about the Fathers of the Western Church up to the 6th century AD. The Institute was erected in St. Augustine's priory in Valletta. In 1988, the Institute was transferred to a more spacious, accessible and central headquarters, in St. Joseph's House in Pieta'. In 2000, the Institute was recog nised internationally as a centre for research and knowledge in the Augustinian Order. Other centres are present in Leuven (Belgium), Perugia (Italy), Palermo (Sicily), Würzburg (Germany), Vallodolid (Spain) and in Eindhoven (Holland). The Institute is also the centre for the translation of some of the works of St. Augustine into Maltese, as well as publications about the thought, philosophy and theology of St. Augustine. The academic year of the Institute is made up of three study units, that is, Kors ghal Kulhadd (September - December), the Annual Saint Augustine Lecture (November) and the Lectio Augustini (January - March). In this academic year 2008-2009, the Augustinian Province is granting a Scholarship of €1200 which is open to all those, who would like to participate. More details can be obtained by contacting the Secretary of the Institute.
