Pastoral Work Secretariat for Missions
Introduction
The Secretariat for Augustinian Missions has been in operation for these last 10 years. It was started on the initiative of the same missionaries. The idea was brought to light when in 1993 in São Paulo Brazil, a meeting was organized amongst the missionaries, who worked in that land. Fr. Mario Abela OSA, who worked in the same mission, was chosen as the promoter. The main aim of this secretariat was to promote the Augustinian Missionary spirit amongst its members and organize missionary experiences in the missionary lands.
In 1994, Fr. Mario began meeting with some youths who wanted to make a missionary experience in summer. The first group was made up of 11 people. Since it was such a good experience it has been organized every year. Before going to Brazil, many preparations are held. These include learning Portuguese, live-in, fund raising, programmes on the radio, masses in different churches, participating in the AMITEX fair in Naxxar and other activities.
During the year, the secretariat publishes the leaflet AMIGOS so that it continues to keep contact with people and the benefactors of the Augustinian missionaries. Once a year, it also publishes a calendar, which is keenly awaited by many people.
During the year, the Secretary for Missions organizes monthly meetings for all its members as part of their formation. These meetings include moments of prayer, a talk about St. Augustine and his writings and discussions.
