Spirituality
Introduction
The aim of this short essay is to give an outline of the spirituality of Saint Augustine. The core of Augustine’s spirituality has been summarised by Augustine himself in his well-known saying: “Lord you have made us and drawn us to yourself, and our heart is unquiet until it rests in you” (Confessions 1,1,1). Thus the starting point of his spirituality is the fact that man is created in the image of God. Next, Augustine affirms that man is created with an immediate tendency toward God, thus man is capable of God. Eventually he proposes the way of interiority as a means by which man can reach God. In so doing man is assisted by the grace of God. Another fundamental facet of Augustine’s spirituality is its communitarian dimension.
